Tumble dryers are highly convenient, but they run at very high temperatures. Accumulated lint and faulty thermostats can create a severe fire hazard if left unchecked. Here's how to evaluate if your dryer is safe to operate:

1. Clean the Lint Filter Daily

The lint filter must be cleaned after every single load. Restricting airflow causes the heating element to run hotter than designed, increasing the chance of lint igniting behind the drum.

2. Watch for Long Drying Times

If a normal load of towels takes two or three cycles to dry, your dryer is either overloaded or the exhaust vent is clogged. A clogged vent traps hot, moist air inside, forcing the dryer to run longer and hotter, putting excessive strain on the thermal fuses.

3. The Dryer is Extremely Hot to Touch

If the outside cabinet of the dryer feels burning hot, or if your clothes come out scorched, the internal thermostat is likely failing. Turn off the appliance immediately and call for a technician.

4. Strange Burning Smells

A burning smell (like hot dust or plastic) is a major red flag. It indicates that lint has bypassed the filter and is contacting the heater coil, or that internal wiring is melting. Never run a dryer with a burning smell unsupervised.
